Australian troops will remain in Iraq for 2018 to continue training local security forces despite the defeat of Islamic State, the head of the Defence Force says.
In a wide ranging update on military matters to Senate estimates, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin also described recent Russian air exercises conducted out of Indonesia as "unusual". The exercises prompted the Royal Australian Air Force to put its base at Darwin on high alert.
