"Barzani threatens with military response to Turkey"
Shafaq News/ President of Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani said in a meeting with a number of U.S. officials, in the summer resort of Salahuddin, that if Turkish forces try to attack the lands of the Region ,
under the pretext of repelling the Kurdistani PKK the regional government will respond militarily . He did not rule out attack on Turkish troops in the Kurdistan Region."Wikileaks " site reveals that "the United States and Turkey had put considerable pressure on Massoud Barzani, to get him to make him to count the PKK as a terrorist organization," adding that "Barzani refused to respond to those pressures."
It appears from the documents that "Barzani and during the reception of a number of U.S. officials in 07/18/2007, in the summer resort of Salahuddin, told them that if Turkey conduct a military attack, the government of the Region will respond, and likely to attack military units stationed in the Region", referring to the peacekeeping forces deployed by Turkey during the internal fighting between the forces of the Kurdistan Democratic Party headed by Barzani, and the forces of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan led by President Jalal Talabani.
It is possible to infer from the documents that "The United States believes that the leaders of the Kurdistan Democratic are closer to Turkey and some of them are against Iran, compared with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, which has close relations with Iran."
The documents reveal also that "Barzani rejected strongly the entry of Turkish troops (as part of the international coalition forces to topple Saddam's regime) to the lands of the region," adding that "Barzani told the Americans that the peacekeeping forces of Turkey located in the region since 1997, to monitor the cease-fire between the party and the Patriotic Union, participated in providing weapons to the Turkmen Front and in the theft historic monuments, and in the assassination of people, trafficking in narcotics. "
The documents highlight that "the Turkish Parliament after Barzani's statements, refused in March 2003 a U.S. request to join the international coalition to overthrow Saddam."
The documents add that "Barzani stood since 2004, against the military operations launched by Turkish
troops against the PKK stating that "The Office President of the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region, Fouad Hussein, had informed the U.S. side, in 30 October 2007, that fears plague the region that the real goal of the Turkish attacks is to hit the Region ", as a result of what Fouad Hussein thought of " fear of Turkey from the existence of a Region and a successful Kurdish self-rule. "
It is quoted from the documents that "Fouad Hussein pointed out that it is not acceptable to the Kurds that the Kurdish forces to stand against other Kurdish forces or fight them, asserting that America alone can solve this crisis through its relations with the Turkish army."
The documents show that "Barzani's words troubled the American ambassador about the possibility of failure of America's attempts to persuade Barzani, to count the Kurdistan Workers' as a terrorist organization, or coming up with counterproductive results " and that "America loses the confidence of Barzani."
And on the pressures exerted by the United States on the Region of Kurdistan to take out fighters of the PKK from its lands , Massoud Barzani, to tell the Americans that "If Kurdistan Workers guerrilla do not remain in Kurdistan, it is likely that Iran will open doors for them, and encourages them to rapprochement with the Islamic groups such as Proponents of Islam. This creates a new Iranian front in the Region of Kurdistan. "
In February 2007, , Barzani said to the U.S. ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad during his visit that " He is against the American unilateral position toward the PKK and the arrest of its leaders and he requests from the United States to find a political solution."
