a study of a draft law which impose the death sentences abolishment in the region, calling on international and local organizations to support this project.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission on Human Rights Salar Mahmoud said in an interview with Shafaq that his committee is considering a bill to abolish the death sentences in effect in the federal Iraq, in general as well as in Kurdistan Region and replace it with other provisions, noting that death sentences would not serve the political reforms ongoing in the region of Kurdistan.
The ratification of the death sentences imposed on those convicted in Iraq raised a broad debate because of the reluctance of the President Jalal Talabani to approve to implement them as he had signed an international document that calls for the abolition of the death penalty.
" The members of parliament are divided into two parts in this regard, one of them are with the bill abolishing the death sentences and they are the majority, and the other to stand against it ," He also said, calling for international and local organizations to support the Commission in this regard.
