of Iraq's dependence on gas imports from neighboring countries to provide power plants with gaseous fuel, but the Ministry of Electricity has recently announced that it has signed a preliminary agreement with Iran to import natural gas for use in the production of electricity.
The MP in the parliamentary oil and gas committee Farhad Atrushi explained : "Signing  the principle contract between the Ministry of Electricity and the Iranian side is a part of a speedy resolution of the worsening power crisis in Iraq."
But the energy experts confirmed that Iraq possesses huge reserves of gas that  put it in the ranks of the top 10 producing countries in the world, in a time of growing demand on this article to electricity generation and water desalination, especially in southern Iraq.
For his part, the economist Basim Jamil Antwan said in an interview with Shafaq "The lack of coordination between the ministries of oil and electricity was  a feature of the performance of ministries throughout the period, despite the supervision of the Deputy Prime Minister on energy matters Hussein al-Shahristani on the two ministries."
It is said that Iraq still faces difficulties of electricity severances, after eight years of the change led by the United States to overthrow the former regime . The national grid still does not provide electricity only for a few hours a day, and power severance became the main complaint of the Iraqis through the protests prevailed in the country recently.
According to experts working in the gas industry, Iraq is capable of producing more than 6000 million standard cubic feet of associated gas, which is  enough to cover domestic consumption
