Marriage traditions in Old Babylon
SHAFAQ Herodotus said that Illyrian clan Inini in old Babylon there were certain traditions about marriage….
All the young girls who were able to get married were gathered in public place with men looking at them to choose their future wives from them. They call for the most beautiful women to be sold to the men for marriage. The beautiful women had higher prices than the less beautiful ones. Therefore rich people used to compete for the most beautiful women and they usually bought the most beautiful ones. As for the poor, they did not seek the beauty in their wives. They only wanted good women for children. One their tradition about that was that fathers did not have the right to enforce his daughter to marry the man he preferred. Also any man in that time had no right to accompany a woman to a house without a guarantor. One of the strange customs was that a wife could devote herself to serve the temple by allowing somebody to make love with her in the temple itself. After that she could return home and nobody was able to seduce her then. This kind of relationship was found in Cyprus as well.
