More than 900 archeological sites in Erbil

8th of January 2011 the presence of 900 archeological sites registered in the Directorate, noting that the absence of the required budget prevented enabling us to work on a number of other archaeological sites.
Haider Hassan, explained to the Kurdish news agency (Rn) today :"The Directorate of the Erbil Archeology has been able so far to work on more than 900 archaeological site," noting :"More than 50 sites of all those sites located within the city center, some dating back thousands of years" .
He continued: "It is expected that there are thousands of archaeological sites beneath the city of Erbil. The Department of Archeology could not work on them because of inadequate allocation of required budget for the Directorate," noting:" The governorate of Erbil contains the largest number of archaeological monuments compared with the rest of Iraqi cities."
For his part, the Director-General of the archeology of the Kurdistan Region Abu Bakr Othman (Rn) said: "We demanded formally to expand the building, of Erbil Museum, and to establish a national museum in Erbil as the capital of the Kurdistan Region, and we are waiting for approvals of the presidency of the Council of Ministers of the Kurdistan region to start the Museum construction works ".
He added:"We have signed contracts with a number of local universities, as well as universities from other foreign countries to work on archaeological sites, and to carry out prospections and exploration on the antiques found in many archaeological areas.
