Where do Faily Kurds Live?

(taken from a study written by Dr, Majeed Ja'afer)

Faily Kurds have lived and still live on both sides of the Iraq-Iran borders…

This contiguous area of Kurdistan was divided and artificial border lines were agreed upon according to the treaty of “Qasr Shirin” between the Ottoman and Safavid empires. In 1639 the Treaty of Qasr Shīrīn gave the eastern parts of Southern Kurdistan to Safavid Iran whereas the western part of Kurdistan, Baghdad and all of Mesopotamia became part of Ottoman Turkey. Later, these artificial borderlines were reinforced by the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916. However, until 1960, these borders did not exist in reality and there were no real restrictions on the free movement of people and goods across this section of the borders. On the Iranian side, Faily Kurds areas include the provinces of Kermanshah and Ilam as well as areas to the south of Ilam. In fact Baghdad where many Faily Kurds have lived and still live was geographically and logistically much nearer to them than Tehran. On the Iraqi side, Faily Kurds live mainly in the central and southern areas, in Khanaqin, Mandali, and other areas in the governorate of Diyala, Badra, Jassan, Wasit and other localities. There have been high concentrations of Faily Kurds in Baghdad. After the forcible mass-deportation of Faily Kurds to Iran by the Baath totalitarian regime during 1969-1972 and again during 1980-1990, Faily Kurds moved on from Iran to many parts of the globe, to Europe, Australia and North America. However, many of the Faily Kurds who were deported to Iran settled in Tehran.
