A French mission discovered a major archaeological site in Erbil

The Department of Antiquities in Erbil, announced the discovery…

of an archaeological site which is considered  as the second in terms of size and importance after the ancient castle in ancient Erbil.
These discoveries came about through the work of a French team from the University of Lyon 2  in a site in the northern west  of the city of current Erbil. They found out antiquities discoveries dating back to the middle and new  Assyrian ages  leading to the Islamic era.
The director of Erbil  Antiquities Haider Hassan Hussein in a joint news conference with the French mission team said  that the new   archaeological site is a large hill, and it was known as a city through the large excavations that took place in the nineteenth century by a British team of archaeologists.
Meanwhile, The French professor Olivier Roll said that the site of  Shmamk Palace antique , which  is located between Erbil and the Tigris River is important in terms of its large size and area, and indicated that it is the second archaeological site after Irbil's castle , because of its large area and size and its importance. It corresponds to what is found in historical books.
